I came across an incredible quote from Abraham Lincoln, famously a lawyer before a President (and the greatest ever). His words must ring even more true today than they did when he spoke them:
“Discourage litigation. Persuade your neighbors to compromise whenever you can. Point out to them how the nominal winner is often a real loser – in fees, expenses, and waste of time. As a peacemaker the lawyer has a superior opportunity of being a good man. There will still be business enough.”
Lawyers are often so afraid of appearing “weak” to a client if and when they counsel mediation over litigation, compromise over combat. We lawyers must believe ourselves to actually be “counsellors” if we are to truly fulfill the oath we took upon joining the profession.
